Shopify and ChatGPT (2026): What Shopify Connects for You, and What Store Owners Still Have to Check

By Sergei Ponomarev โ€ข 2026-10-26

If you run a Shopify store that sells to US customers, your products are most likely already in ChatGPT. Shopify turns on its "agentic storefronts" by default for eligible stores and sends your product data to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. You do not need to install an app, build anything, or pay an extra fee. When a shopper decides to buy, ChatGPT sends them to your own Shopify checkout.

So the question for a store owner is no longer "how do I connect ChatGPT to my store?" It is "is my store eligible, and does ChatGPT describe my products correctly?" This guide answers both, from Shopify's own help center.

Two different things called "Shopify ChatGPT"

People searching for Shopify and ChatGPT usually mean one of two things:

What it isWho it is for
Selling in ChatGPT (agentic storefronts)Shoppers ask ChatGPT for a product, ChatGPT shows yours from Shopify Catalog, and the shopper buys on your checkoutstore owners who want sales from AI assistants
Running your store with ChatGPTShopify's app inside ChatGPT for building and managing a store by chattingstore owners who want help with admin work

This guide is about the first one: getting found and bought.

How selling in ChatGPT works on Shopify

According to Shopify's help center, the ChatGPT channel is "a discovery-focused referrer platform for customers to find your products". It is active by default for eligible stores. The flow:

  1. A shopper asks ChatGPT something like "navy running shorts under $40".
  2. ChatGPT searches product data, including Shopify Catalog, and shows products it thinks fit.
  3. The shopper picks one and completes the purchase on your online store checkout, inside ChatGPT's in-app browser on mobile or in a new tab on the web.
  4. The order appears in your Shopify admin with channel or referrer attribution, like any other sales channel.

Because checkout happens on your own store, your branding, discounts, payment methods and checkout customizations all apply. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT: you pay only your standard payment processing fees.

Requirements to sell on ChatGPT

From Shopify's help center:

  • your store sells to customers in the United States (the store itself can be based elsewhere);
  • your products are eligible for Shopify Catalog;
  • you have accepted the Shopify Agentic Storefronts Supplemental Terms of Service;
  • your terms of service, privacy policy, and return and refund policy are filled in under Settings > Policies.

B2B-only products are not supported, and products on OpenAI's prohibited list do not appear in ChatGPT results.

How it changed in 2026

When OpenAI launched Instant Checkout in September 2025, Shopify said its merchants would be able to sell directly inside ChatGPT conversations. That plan changed. In March 2026, as OpenAI scaled back Instant Checkout and refocused on product discovery, Shopify switched to the current model: products found in ChatGPT through Shopify's catalog, purchases completed on the merchant's own checkout. Shopify told merchants they "do not need to build apps for ChatGPT to participate in commerce", and the ChatGPT channel in agentic storefronts went live by default later that month.

For the OpenAI side of the story, see ChatGPT Instant Checkout for merchants: what changed.

ChatGPT is not the only AI channel

Agentic storefronts cover several AI assistants, and they do not all work the same way:

AI channelHow your products get thereWhere the customer pays
ChatGPTShopify Catalogyour online store checkout (in-app browser or new tab)
Microsoft CopilotShopify CatalogShopify-powered direct checkout inside Copilot, if you turn it on
Google AI Mode and GeminiGoogle & YouTube sales channel or Google Merchant Centerdirect checkout inside the channel, rolling out
Meta (for example Muse)Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channeldirect checkout inside the channel, if turned on

You manage all of them in your Shopify admin under Sales channels > Agentic. Orders from each channel show where they came from, so you can see whether AI assistants bring real sales.

What Shopify sends about your products

Shopify Catalog is, in Shopify's words, "the authoritative product data feed" to AI channels. By default it lists each product with its title, description, options, images, price, availability and other key attributes, structured so AI agents can read them, and it updates continuously, so AI channels get your latest prices and stock.

A few settings matter more than they look:

  • Catalog Mapping. If your titles, descriptions or categories live in custom fields (metafields, metaobjects, tag prefixes, or variant names packed into the title), Shopify Catalog Mapping lets you point the catalog at the right data. It can also group separate products that are really variants of one product, so they show as a single listing.
  • Compare-at prices. You choose whether AI agents see your compare-at price. If you show it, an assistant may present the product as on sale with a strikethrough price. If not, only the current price is sent.
  • Legal disclosures. Shopify advises putting any relevant legal disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of the product description.
  • Agent files. Every Shopify store automatically serves /agents.md, plus /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt, with your store name, sitemap, policies and discovery endpoints. You do not need an app to generate them. They do not replace Shopify Catalog.
  • Crawlers. AI assistants can also read your store through the open web. You control that in your robots.txt.liquid template; bot management at the network level is handled by Shopify.

What store owners still have to check

Shopify moves the data. Whether the data is right is still on you. This is where sales are won or lost, because a shopper may meet your product first inside an AI answer, without seeing your product page.

  1. Eligibility. Open Sales channels > Agentic. If Shopify Catalog shows "Ineligible", none of your products are in the catalog. Click it to see the reason and fix it.
  2. Policies. The return and refund policy is a requirement, not a nice-to-have. It is also one of the first things shoppers ask an assistant about.
  3. Features in plain words. If a shopper asks for "waterproof" or "with a throttle", that word has to be in the title or description. In our published review of five US e-bike stores, an AI shopper skipped a model that was $200 cheaper because the feature it was asked for appeared only in customer reviews, not in the specs. Details in five e-bike stores let the AI shopper reach checkout.
  4. Variants grouped correctly. If each color or size is a separate product in your store, use Catalog Mapping to group them, or the assistant may treat them as unrelated items.
  5. Price with shipping. Make shipping costs and delivery times easy to find. A total the shopper cannot see is a sale they hesitate on.
  6. Compare-at prices you can stand behind. If you send them, make sure the "was" price is real and current.
  7. Disclosures in the first 6,000 characters of descriptions, where relevant.
  8. Crawler rules. Check that your robots.txt.liquid does not block AI assistants you want to be found in.
  9. Attribution. Watch orders by channel in your admin for a few weeks before you decide whether the channel is worth more effort.
  10. Ask ChatGPT about your own products the way a customer would, and compare every answer with your store: price, variant, stock, shipping, returns. Each mismatch is a fix.

Not on Shopify? The Agentic plan

Shopify also sells an Agentic plan for brands that do not run their online store on Shopify. It publishes your products to AI channels, which Shopify lists as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity and the Shop app, with no monthly fee: you pay a card processing fee on what you sell, and rates depend on your country. You keep your existing online store. On the Agentic plan, direct checkout in AI channels is turned off by default.

How to opt out

If you do not want ChatGPT to receive your data through Shopify Catalog:

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels > Agentic.
  2. Turn off Allow Shopify to manage for me.
  3. Click ChatGPT and turn off Shopify Catalog access.
  4. Save.

It can take up to 7 days for your data to stop being shared. Shopify notes that ChatGPT may still show your products through other routes, such as web crawling, so hiding products completely needs separate steps. Turning off ChatGPT does not affect other platforms such as the Shop app.

FAQ

How do I connect ChatGPT to my Shopify store?

For selling, you usually do not have to. Agentic storefronts are active by default for eligible stores, and Shopify sends your products to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog. Check Sales channels > Agentic to confirm your store is eligible.

Does Shopify charge a fee for sales from ChatGPT?

No. Shopify says there are no fees for selling in ChatGPT; you pay only your standard payment processing fees.

Can customers buy inside ChatGPT on Shopify stores?

Not for ChatGPT itself. ChatGPT sends shoppers to your own Shopify checkout in an in-app browser or a new tab. Direct checkout inside the channel exists for Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta, where you turn it on.

Do I need a ChatGPT app for my Shopify store?

No. Shopify says merchants do not need to build apps for ChatGPT to take part in commerce.

Why does ChatGPT show the wrong details for my product?

Usually because of the data: a feature mentioned only in reviews, variants split into separate products, shipping that is hard to find, or custom fields the catalog is not reading. Catalog Mapping and clearer descriptions fix most of it.

What is the Shopify Agentic plan?

A plan for brands not on Shopify that publishes their products to AI channels without a monthly fee, charging only a processing fee per sale.

Want an independent check?

If you would rather not test this yourself, we run an independent test purchase: an AI shopper gets a real task on your store, and you get a written record of where it found the product, where it got the price, variant, shipping or return wrong, and how far it got toward checkout. Order an independent test purchase.
