ChatGPT Go vs Plus: $8 or $20? What the Extra $144 a Year Actually Buys You

By Sergei Ponomarev • 2026-10-20

"ChatGPT Go vs Plus" is now one of the first things Google suggests when you start typing "ChatGPT go". It makes sense. Go costs $8 a month in the US, Plus costs $20, and the difference over a year is $144. That is real money for a tool most people use to write emails, plan trips and help with homework.

I went through OpenAI's own pricing page line by line, the full comparison table rather than the marketing cards, to see what that $12 a month actually changes. The surprise is how much the two plans share. On most everyday features, Go and Plus are identical. The gap is concentrated in a handful of places, and whether you need any of them decides the answer.

Here is the short version, then the detail.

Go is enough if you mostly chat, write, ask questions, upload documents and make the odd image, and you do not mind occasional ads.

Plus is worth it if you need the strongest GPT-6 models, full deep research, Codex or ChatGPT Work for real projects, or you simply want no ads and faster answers at busy times.

The prices

PlanUS priceEuro price shown on OpenAI's EU pageAds
Free$0€0yes, where ads have launched
Go$8 a month€6.50"This plan may include ads"
Plus$20 a month€23no
Profrom $100 a monthfrom €103no

Two notes. In Europe the gap is wider than in the US: Plus costs more than three times Go there, not two and a half. And OpenAI sells both Go and Plus monthly only, so there is no annual discount to factor in on either side.

What Go and Plus have in common

This is the part most comparisons skip, and it is the part that saves people money. According to OpenAI's comparison table, both plans get exactly the same:

FeatureGoPlus

The context window line deserves a second look. It means Go can read the same long contract, the same 300-page report or the same long conversation that Plus can. For a lot of people that was the main reason to upgrade, and it no longer applies.

Where Plus is genuinely better

These are the rows where OpenAI's table shows a real difference. If none of them matters to you, Go is the rational choice.

Put simply, the $12 buys you four things:

1. A smarter model for hard questions. Go runs on GPT-6 Luna, OpenAI's light and fast model. Plus adds the Sol and Astra models, which are much better at multi-step reasoning, careful analysis and difficult writing. For "rewrite this email" the difference is small. For "find the flaw in this business plan" it is large. If you want the background on the models, I compared them in the Opus 5.5, GPT-6 Sol and Luna price war.

2. Real research and work tools. Full deep research, Codex for code, ChatGPT Work on every device, Sites, interactive charts and the Office extensions. These are the features that do paid work rather than answer questions.

3. Speed when everyone is online. Go's response time is officially limited by capacity. At busy times you may wait. Plus is listed as fast.

4. No ads. OpenAI says Go "may include ads". Plus does not.

The simple test: which one do you need?

Answer five questions honestly about the last month, not about what you might do one day.

QuestionIf yes
Did you run more than a couple of deep research reports?Plus
Did you use AI for code, spreadsheets or documents you were paid for?Plus
Did a weaker answer cost you time, a mistake or a redo on something that mattered?Plus
Did ads or slow answers at peak times actually annoy you?Plus
Was it mostly chats, emails, questions, homework, recipes and travel plans?Go

If you answered yes only to the last question, Go will very likely feel the same as Plus for you, at 40% of the US price. If you answered yes to any of the first three, the $12 probably pays for itself, often within one task.

The money math

The cleanest way to decide is to price your time.

If Plus saves youWorth at $25 an hourPlus pays for its extra $12 if...
30 minutes a month$12.50it saves you half an hour a month
2 hours a month$50easily
nothing you can name$0it does not, so take Go

Half an hour a month is a low bar for anyone using AI in their job, and that is the point. For work use, the question is rarely "is Plus worth $20" and almost always "am I using it for work at all". For personal use, the honest answer for most people is Go, or even Free.

That matches what people actually spend. Across AI tools the typical payer spends about $25 a month, and the big spenders are the ones doing paid work with it, as I showed in what people actually pay for AI. Most people are paying for one plan and using a fraction of it.

Three common mistakes

Buying Plus "to be safe". If you have never hit a limit on Free or Go, you are paying $144 a year for headroom you do not use. Start low and upgrade the day a real limit stops real work.

Thinking Go is a cut-down trial. It is not. Same context window, same projects, same file uploads, same image creation. It is a full product with a lighter model and ads.

Paying for Plus and two other AI subscriptions. Many people pay for ChatGPT Plus, Claude and Gemini at once and use one of them. If you want to compare what the $20, $100 and $200 tiers of each actually include, see what AI subscriptions really buy and ChatGPT vs Claude vs Gemini.

What this means for you

If you use ChatGPT a few times a week for everyday life, take Go, or stay on Free if you have never hit a limit. You are not missing much.

If you use it at work every day, take Plus. The stronger models and full deep research save more than $12 of your time in a month, usually in a week.

If you are trying to earn money with it, the decision is easy: Plus at least, because the work features are where the money is. The routes are in how to make money with ChatGPT.

If you are on Plus and not sure you need it, downgrade to Go for one month. If you do not notice, you have just saved $144 a year. If you do, you will know exactly why you are paying.

The honest take

What struck me in OpenAI's table is how deliberately the line has been drawn. Everything a casual user touches, the chat, the memory, the long documents, the images, the projects, is in Go. Everything a working user depends on, the strongest reasoning, deep research, Codex, speed at busy times and a screen without ads, is in Plus.

That is a sensible design, and it gives you a simple rule. Pay for Plus when ChatGPT is part of how you earn money. Pay for Go when it is part of how you live. Most people asking "Go or Plus?" are in the second group, and they can keep the $144.

So look at your last ten chats: how many of them were work you were paid for?
