Yes, you can make money with Canva, and the free plan is enough to start. The money comes from six places: royalties from the Canva Creators program, selling your own templates on Etsy or your own site, design work for small businesses, print products, social media management, and teaching other people to use Canva. Canva does not pay you for using it. You earn when someone else pays for what you made with it, and Canva's license decides which of those sales are allowed.
Below is each route, what Canva officially says about it, what it costs, and where beginners usually get stuck. Prices and rules were checked on Canva's own pages on 29 October 2026, and each section links to the page it comes from.
Six ways to make money with Canva
| Route | Who pays you | How you get paid | Hardest part |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canva Creators | Canva, from a monthly royalty pool | royalties when people use your templates or elements | getting accepted; template creators apply with a portfolio |
| Selling templates | buyers on Etsy, Gumroad or your own site | a one-time price per template or bundle | standing out among thousands of similar listings |
| Design for small businesses | local shops, coaches, agencies | per job or a monthly package | finding the first clients |
| Print products | buyers of posters, cards, prints | per sale, through a print shop or print-on-demand | the license limits on stock content |
| Social media management | small businesses | a monthly retainer | consistency, month after month |
| Teaching Canva | students, other creators | courses, workshops, YouTube | building an audience first |
The first two are the ones people usually mean by "make money with Canva". The third is where beginners tend to get paid first, because a business that needs ten flyers this week will pay for them this week.
What Canva costs
From Canva's US pricing page, 29 October 2026:
| Plan | Price | What matters for earning |
| Free | $0 | 1.6M+ templates, 4.7M+ photos and graphics, 5GB storage, up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses |
| Pro | $144 per year for one person | 3.6M+ templates including premium, 141M+ premium photos, videos and audio, 5 Brand Kits, AI tools such as resize, translate and background removal, about 10x the AI use of Free |
| Business | $250 per year per person | the Pro library plus team tools, 100 Brand Kits and approvals |
Those are yearly prices; Canva says yearly billing saves from 16% against paying monthly. Pro mostly pays for itself through Magic Resize (one design turned into every social media size) and background removal. If you only sell templates, you can start on Free and upgrade once orders come in.
1. Canva Creators: royalties from Canva itself
Canva Creators is Canva's own marketplace for templates and design elements. According to Canva's help center page on the program, there are three types of creators:
- Template Creators, mostly graphic designers, who publish editable layouts for presentations, social posts, videos, t-shirts, flyers and posters.
- Element Creators, such as photographers, illustrators, typographers, videographers and audio producers, who publish photos, graphics, icons, stickers, music and sound effects.
- Specialty Creators, such as verified teachers who make education resources.
How the money works. Canva pays royalties from a pool that grows with its subscription revenue and is calculated every month. For templates, your share depends on template usages, which Canva defines as each time a design made from your template is downloaded, printed or presented. Free and Pro template usage both count. For elements, your share depends on how many times your Pro elements are exported. Canva says the exact size of the pool each month is confidential.
How to get in. Template Creators apply with a portfolio through an application form. Canva calls the template program a beta and says an answer can take up to a couple of months. At the time of writing, sign-ups for new Element Creators are on hold. Every submission goes through a review against guidelines you receive after acceptance.
What this means in practice. Royalties reward volume and usefulness. A template earns when thousands of people need exactly that layout: a weekly planner, a real estate "just listed" post, a restaurant menu, a pitch deck. Canva says it wants creators to design in their own language and for their own culture, which is a real opening if you design for a market that English-only creators ignore.
2. Selling your own Canva templates
You can design templates in Canva and sell them yourself on Etsy, Gumroad, Creative Market or your own store. The usual delivery is a PDF with a link that opens a copy of your template in the buyer's Canva account.
What the license allows. Canva's Content License Agreement lists "design templates solely for use on Canva" among the permitted uses. In plain terms: you sell access to an editable Canva template, not files cut out of Canva's library. This matters for Pro content. Under the license, a Pro photo or graphic is licensed for use in one design and may not be copied, downloaded or distributed as a standalone item. A template link keeps everything inside Canva, where your buyer's own account handles the license for any Pro elements.
What buyers pay for. The best-selling templates save someone a specific job: a wedding seating chart, a monthly content calendar for hairdressers, a one-page resume for nurses. "50 Instagram templates" is a crowded listing; "30 Instagram templates for physiotherapy clinics, with captions" is a product.
Etsy fees. According to Etsy's fee policy, Etsy charges $0.20 to list an item, a 6.5% transaction fee and a payment processing fee of about 3% plus $0.25 in the US. A $12 template therefore nets roughly $10.40 before tax. Etsy also tightened its rules on AI-made items in October 2026: if you used AI to make the product, say so in the listing. The full breakdown is in AI on Etsy: what you can still sell.
What to put in the PDF. The template link, a 3-step "how to use it" guide, which fonts and colors are used, and a note that Pro elements need a Canva Pro account if the buyer wants to keep them. That last line prevents most refund requests.
3. Design work for small businesses
The fastest money with Canva usually comes from people who will never open Canva themselves: the cafΓ© that needs a new menu, the gym that needs a month of social posts, the real estate agent who needs listing flyers by Friday.
The license supports this. Section 4A of Canva's Content License Agreement lets you transfer a Canva design, including Free and Pro content, to a client for the client's own use, on three conditions:
- you have a written agreement with the client saying the design is for their use and follows Canva's terms;
- you remain responsible for the client following those terms;
- one design goes to one client.
A short line in your invoice or proposal covers the first point. Use ChatGPT or Claude to write the outreach and the package descriptions; prompts 2, 3 and 4 in our ChatGPT prompts to make money do exactly that. To set prices, start from the AI freelancer rate card rather than guessing.
One trap: logos. The license prohibits using any Canva content as part of a trademark, business name or logo, except fonts. You can design a logo in Canva, but it must be built from your own shapes and drawings plus fonts, not from Canva's graphics, icons or templates. If a client asks for "a logo from that Canva template", explain why you will draw it from scratch, because a logo is the one design they will want to own outright.
4. Print products and print-on-demand
Canva's license allows "prints, posters and other reproductions for personal or promotional purposes, resale, license or other distribution", as well as greeting cards and postcards for resale. So yes, you can sell printed products designed in Canva.
The limit is in the prohibited uses. You may not use Canva content on a standalone basis on sites that sell "on demand" products such as t-shirts, mugs, posters and postcards. A shirt that is just one Canva stock illustration with a word on it is the exact case the rule describes. For print-on-demand, make the main artwork yourself (your own drawing, photo, lettering or AI image you generated), and use Canva for layout, text and mockups.
Two more exclusions to check before printing anything: content marked "Branded Content" is for personal use only and may not be used to make merchandise, and content marked "Editorial Use Only" cannot be used commercially at all. Both labels appear in the content's source information.
The economics of print-on-demand, platform by platform, are in AI print on demand: is it still profitable.
5. Social media management
Many small businesses do not need a designer for one project; they need someone to post for them every week. Canva fits that job well: one Brand Kit per client (Pro includes five) and social content scheduling built into Pro. Magic Resize turns one post into the Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Stories sizes in a few clicks.
This route gives you the steadiest income of the six, because it is a monthly retainer rather than a one-off sale. It is also the most demanding, because the work never stops. The full business model is in AI social media management.
6. Teaching Canva
People pay to learn Canva fast: through courses, paid workshops for small business owners, school staff training or YouTube channels that earn from ads.
A note on affiliate income. Many guides promise a fixed payment for every Canva Pro subscriber you refer. Canva's help center says affiliate benefits are available only through its Canvassador program, and that program was closed to new applications when we checked on 29 October 2026. Figures for per-referral payouts that circulate online come from third-party affiliate directories, not from Canva. Plan your income without them.
Where AI fits in
Canva's AI tools are now part of every plan, with limits: up to 20 Standard or Premium AI uses on Free and about ten times more on Pro. The useful ones for paid work are background removal, Magic Resize, translation for clients who sell in several languages, and Magic Layers, which splits a flat image into editable parts.
Who owns what Canva's AI makes? Canva's AI Product Terms say you own the output, except where it modifies or includes Canva's licensed content, which stays under the content license. The same terms warn that outputs may not be unique: another user can get a similar image. For anything a client wants to own exclusively, such as a logo or a brand mascot, do not rely on a single AI generation.
For the words around your designs, a general chatbot is still faster: listing titles, captions, outreach messages. See Claude prompts for making money if Claude is your tool.
How much can you make with Canva?
Canva does not publish what creators earn, and the size of the royalty pool is confidential, so treat any "I make $X a month on Canva" headline as one person's result, not a typical one. What can be said:
- Canva has a big audience. Its co-founder Cliff Obrecht said in February 2026 that it has more than 265 million monthly active users and more than 31 million paid users, as reported by Dataconomy. Every template in the Creators library is in front of that audience.
- In wider surveys, about half of people with an AI side hustle earn under $500 a month. The details are in 79 million Americans have earned money with AI. Canva work follows the same pattern: small at first, growing with niche and repeat clients.
- Service work pays sooner, templates pay longer. A client project pays this week. A template pays a little every month for as long as people buy or use it.
A first week with Canva
- Day 1. Pick one niche you know: an industry you worked in, a hobby, a local market.
- Day 2. Look at the 20 best-selling Canva templates for that niche on Etsy. Write down what every one of them is missing.
- Day 3. Make one template that fixes that gap, using only Free content or your own elements.
- Day 4. Make three versions of the same layout for three local businesses as free samples.
- Day 5. Send the samples with a short, specific message to those businesses.
- Day 6. List the template on Etsy with an honest description and the PDF delivery guide.
- Day 7. Apply to Canva Creators with your best five designs, if you design templates.

FAQ
Can you make money with Canva for free?
Yes. The free plan includes 1.6 million templates, millions of photos and graphics and a limited number of AI uses, which is enough to make samples, a first template and a first client project. Upgrade to Pro ($144 a year) when the work starts paying.
How does the Canva Creators program pay?
From a monthly royalty pool tied to Canva's subscription revenue. Template creators earn by template usage (each time a design made from their template is downloaded, printed or presented), free and Pro usage alike. Element creators earn from Pro element exports.
Can I sell Canva templates on Etsy?
Yes, if you sell your own templates as Canva template links. The license permits "design templates solely for use on Canva". You cannot resell Canva's own templates unchanged or distribute Canva's photos and graphics as standalone files.
Can I use Canva for print-on-demand t-shirts?
You can use Canva to lay out the design, but the main artwork should be your own. The license bans using Canva content on a standalone basis for on-demand products like t-shirts, mugs and posters.
Can I design logos for clients in Canva?
Only from your own shapes and drawings plus fonts. The license prohibits using Canva's graphics, icons or templates as part of a logo or trademark.
Does Canva have an affiliate program?
Only through its Canvassador program, which was closed to new applications on 29 October 2026, according to Canva's help center.
